Attorney General James Uthmeier’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit has announced the arrest of Akimmia Lewis for financially exploiting an elderly man in Escambia County, Florida. The victim was under her care.
“We will not tolerate those who take advantage of vulnerable Floridians for personal gain,” said Attorney General James Uthmeier. “Our office will continue to aggressively pursue criminals who abuse positions of trust and exploit the elderly.”
The investigation revealed that Lewis misused her position as the victim’s power of attorney to withdraw funds from his bank account. Between August 9, 2022, and February 28, 2023, she transferred approximately $46,788.60 to her accounts and made cash withdrawals without benefiting the victim, who was living in a nursing facility at the time.
Lewis faces one count of Exploitation of an Elderly Person or Disabled Adult (under $50,000), a second-degree felony with a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison. The Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit will handle the prosecution through an agreement with the State Attorney’s Office for the First Judicial Circuit.
