A former firefighter from Key West appeared in federal court to address charges related to the possession of a destructive device and a short-barreled rifle. The indictment claims that on March 14, Vincent Michael Vega, aged 38, was found with parts intended for creating an explosive bomb or similar device. Additionally, he possessed a modified semi-automatic rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches. These firearms were reportedly not registered to Vega as required by federal law.
The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne for the Southern District of Florida and acting Special Agent in Charge Gordon Mallory from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Miami Field Division.
The ATF’s Miami division is leading the investigation into this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Hannah is responsible for prosecuting it.
It is important to note that an indictment serves merely as an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
