In a gripping legal battle that underscores the importance of premises safety, a plaintiff has filed a lawsuit against a local business owner, alleging negligence that led to personal injury. On August 28, 2025, Douglas Higley lodged a complaint in the Circuit Court of the Sixth Judicial Circuit in Pinellas County, Florida, targeting J Calibey Holdings LLC as the defendant.
The case revolves around an incident on October 4, 2023, when Higley was visiting Calibey’s Oakhurst Auto Service Center located at 9220 Antilles Drive in Seminole. As he was leading a fire safety education session for approximately 100 children, Higley tripped over a ground stake used for advertising banners hidden in the grass between the parking lot and public sidewalk. This unexpected fall resulted in multiple injuries and has prompted Higley to seek justice through legal means.
Higley’s complaint accuses J Calibey Holdings LLC of maintaining unsafe premises by allowing hazardous conditions to persist. The lawsuit details how the defendant allegedly failed to take reasonable precautions to prevent such accidents and neglected to maintain or inspect their property adequately. Furthermore, it claims that the company did not warn visitors about potential dangers despite knowing—or having reason to know—about these risks.
According to the filing, Higley suffered significant damages due to this oversight. The injuries listed include bodily harm, pain and suffering, disability, mental anguish, disfigurement, loss of life enjoyment capacity, diminished earnings potential, medical expenses related to injury treatment, and aggravation of pre-existing conditions. The plaintiff argues that these consequences were directly caused by J Calibey Holdings LLC’s failure to exercise reasonable care in managing their property.
As part of his lawsuit, Higley is demanding a jury trial and seeks compensation exceeding $50,000 from J Calibey Holdings LLC. This amount covers not only his physical and emotional suffering but also aims to hold the company accountable for its alleged negligence.
