In a striking legal battle, a mother has taken on a major coffeehouse chain, alleging that their product caused severe harm to her child. Alexis Carr filed a complaint against Starbucks Corporation in the Circuit Court of the 6th Judicial Circuit in Pinellas County, Florida, on February 20, 2026. The lawsuit accuses Starbucks of negligence and product liability after an incident involving one of their coffee cups resulted in significant injuries to Carr’s minor child.

The case stems from an event on August 28, 2025, when Alexis Carr purchased a Grande Pike coffee from Starbucks. According to the complaint, while the coffee was placed in the automobile’s cup holder, the lid unexpectedly detached, causing scalding hot liquid to spill onto K.S., Carr’s minor child. The lawsuit claims that this incident led to “severely painful and disfiguring burns” along with other physical and emotional injuries. The complaint further states that these injuries are either permanent or continuing in nature, suggesting long-term impacts on K.S.’s quality of life.

Carr alleges that Starbucks Corporation failed in its duty of care by designing and selling a defective product. The lawsuit argues that the coffee cup did not perform as expected due to inherent defects or dangerous conditions. It also claims that Starbucks was aware or should have been aware of these issues but failed to take corrective action or provide adequate warnings about potential dangers associated with their product.

The plaintiff is seeking compensatory damages exceeding $50,000 for medical expenses, pain and suffering, mental anguish, and loss of enjoyment of life. Additionally, Carr demands reimbursement for court costs and any other relief deemed appropriate by the court. The complaint includes two counts: strict liability for producing a defective product and negligence for failing to ensure consumer safety.

Representing Alexis Carr is Whitney Page from the Law Offices of Jason Turchin. The case has been assigned Case Number 26-001159-CI.
