In a dramatic legal battle unfolding in Palm Beach County, Florida, a mother is seeking justice after a BMX event turned tragic for her and her son. Erica Dickinson has filed a lawsuit against the American Bicycle Association Company and Okeeheelee BMX Parents Council, Inc., claiming negligence that led to severe injuries during an April 2025 BMX race at Okeeheelee Park. The complaint was officially filed on November 5, 2025, in the Circuit Court of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit by Dickinson’s attorneys.

According to the details of the case, Erica Dickinson attended a BMX event on April 18, 2025, where her son was competing. Due to his young age, she was required to be present at the starting platform to assist him. As the race commenced, her son crashed at the bottom of the platform. In an instinctive reaction to help him, Dickinson rushed down but tripped over a suddenly lifted starting gate, resulting in significant injuries. The lawsuit accuses both defendants of creating hazardous conditions by lifting the gate too soon after the race began—a move deemed foreseeable as it could prompt parents like Dickinson to respond immediately if their child fell.

The complaint highlights several allegations against both defendants. It asserts that they had control over the event and were responsible for ensuring safety measures were adhered to during its execution. However, they allegedly failed in their duty by not warning about or mitigating risks associated with operating the starting gate. The lawsuit claims that these actions—or lack thereof—constitute negligence under Florida law.

Dickinson’s legal team argues that this negligence resulted in physical harm and emotional distress for their client. They detail various impacts on her life including pain and suffering, mental anguish, medical expenses, loss of earnings potential due to disability or disfigurement from injuries sustained during this incident—all considered either permanent or ongoing issues requiring future attention.

In terms of relief sought from this legal action against American Bicycle Association Company and Okeeheelee BMX Parents Council Inc., Dickinson demands compensation exceeding $50,000 along with interest and costs incurred due to these events’ fallout; furthermore insisting upon trial by jury regarding all triable issues presented within this case.

Representing Erica Dickinson are attorneys Donald J. Ward III and Clell Calvin Warriner IV from Searcy Denney Scarola Barnhart & Shipley PA based out of West Palm Beach FL; while Judge Michael A Caruso presides over proceedings identified under Case Number: 502025CA011526XXXAMB Div: AD within said jurisdictional court system.
