A Broward County resident has taken legal action against a local government entity, claiming negligence led to her injury. Janiese D. Washington filed a complaint in the Circuit Court of the 15th Judicial Circuit in Palm Beach County, Florida, on October 8, 2025, against Palm Beach County, alleging negligence related to a sidewalk incident.
The lawsuit stems from an incident on July 12, 2024, when Washington tripped and fell due to an uneven sidewalk at the southwest corner of Broken Sound Parkway and Clint Moore Road in Boca Raton. According to the complaint, Palm Beach County owned and maintained this portion of the sidewalk and failed to warn pedestrians about the change in elevation that posed a tripping hazard. Washington claims that this negligence resulted in her suffering bodily injuries and other damages. The complaint states that “Defendant…was negligent in maintaining said sidewalk and failed to properly warn of a change in elevation which caused a dangerous condition.” As per Florida Statute 768.28, Palm Beach County has waived sovereign immunity for such claims.
Washington’s legal representation asserts that all conditions precedent under Florida law have been met before filing this lawsuit. This includes sending proper notice to both Palm Beach County and the Department of Insurance more than six months prior to filing the suit. The plaintiff is seeking damages exceeding $50,000 for her injuries and associated losses such as medical expenses, loss of earnings, and mental anguish.
The plaintiff demands a jury trial to determine the full extent of damages owed by Palm Beach County. In addition to monetary compensation for past and future losses resulting from her injuries, Washington seeks interest on any awarded amount and reimbursement for legal costs incurred during litigation.
