A woman from Panacea, Florida, has admitted to making false statements in the purchase of two firearms and conducting a straw purchase. Michaela Nicole McMeans, 56, pleaded guilty to these charges, according to John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

U.S. Attorney Heekin stated: “I appreciate the excellent investigative work by our federal law enforcement partners to identify and detain this offender who was purchasing firearms for others who were legally prohibited from purchasing or possessing those weapons themselves. My office will continue to back up the outstanding work of our law enforcement partners with aggressive prosecutions to keep our communities safe.”

The case began after two individuals—one a convicted felon and another a resident alien on a visa—were arrested in April 2025 in Panama City while possessing firearms. Investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) traced both guns back to a single transaction at a federally licensed dealer in March 2025. McMeans had purchased both firearms during that visit and indicated they were for her own use; however, she later admitted they were intended for people she knew could not legally buy them.

McMeans is scheduled for sentencing on February 5, 2026, before District Court Judge Mark Walker in Tallahassee. She could face up to fifteen years in prison.

The ATF investigated the case, which is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Eric K Mountin.

This prosecution falls under Operation Take Back America—a national initiative led by the Department of Justice aimed at combating illegal immigration and dismantling transnational criminal organizations as well as violent crime.
